Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of strapping shoulders with non-stretchable and stretchable tapes to prevent subluxation and pain in stroke patients.
Methods: Thirty-eight patients with subluxation of the hemiplegic shoulder were randomly allocated to 3 groups: non-stretch taping group (NSTG, n=13), stretch taping group (STG, n=13), and control group (CG,n=12). Taping sessions were performed twice a week for 6 weeks. The patients were assessed every 2 weeks
with the Jig test and visual analog scale.
Results: Significant differences were seen between CG and NSTG (P<0.01), CG and STG (P<0.01), and NSTG and STG (P<0.05) in the rate of change in hemiplegic shoulder subluxation and pain.
Conslusions: The results of this study indicate that strapping with non-stretchable tape is more beneficial than with stretchable tape in preventing subluxation and pain. Clinicians might recommend non-stretchable tape to their stroke patients.
